1. AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM (1997)
Research in the USA by Dr Jo Anne Whittaker MD, 1997, showed
that Bowen treatment affects the autonomic nervous system,
as measured by heart rate variability and clinical assessment.
2. TEMPORO-MANDIBULAR JOINT A research project for
the Bowen Technique on TMJ abnormality by Dr.John Bauman,
in the USA. Assessment of masseter tension by Bio Feedback,
measurement of bite and subjective symptoms were compared
before and after treatment. 20 out of the 22 patients showed
significant improvement on the post Bio Feedback assessment.
3. BLOOD CHEMISTRY Dr. Whitaker, using Darkfield,
phase and fluorescent microscopic live cell analysis, has
shown blood chemistry changes following treatment. These changes
corroborate the detox reactions which may last up to 5 days
following a session.
4. LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE (1998) A study in the UK on
the effect of Bowen treatment on lymphatic drainage was published
by lymphodoema nurse Eilish Lund in 'Proof!' (Winter 1998/99).
Also in www.bter.org /research (lymphodoema).
5. FROZEN SHOULDER (1998-2001)
A. A research project by Helen Kinnear and Julian Baker
in the UK, 1998-2000. Results showed significantly improved
shoulder function, through increasing the range of motion
and reducing pain. Shoulder abduction was increased in 78%
of treated patients compared with 22% of the placebo group.
'Actual improvement' was 40% in the treated group compared
with 9% in the placebo group. See BOWEN TECHNIQUE RESEARCH
(frozen shoulder).
B. By Dr. Bernie Carter, Rick Minnery & Bran Clarke.
20 participants diagnosed with frozen shoulder, some longstanding,
were given three to six treatments of the Bowen Technique.
Participants claimed a high level of satisfaction with the
therapy. 70% of participants regained full mobility (equal
to the non affected side) by the end of the treatment. The
other participants showed significant improvement in shoulder
mobility and associated function. See BOWEN TECHNIQUE RESEARCH
(frozen shoulder).
6. FIBROMYALGIA (1998)
A pilot study on the effect of the Bowen Technique for fibromyalgia
sufferers was carried out by Tim Willcocks in the UK, 1997-98.
Four volunteers, all women between the ages of 39 and 52,
having been diagnosed with fibromyalgia for 3 to 5 years,
were given four treatments over a period of five weeks.
Initial symptoms included: pain all over, feelings of electric
shocks, 'clicky jaw', vertigo, deafness, IBS, and loss of
feeling in extremities.
Improvements were experienced by all four participants: walking
and sleeping better, cessation of vertigo attacks, diminished
electric shocks, neck pain eased, balance and hearing improved,
infection lasting only half the anticipated duration, 'calmer
and more self posessed', 'less exhaustion, and feeling brighter'.
Summary comments: 1) "When you get used to so much pain,
you forget what a relief this can be" (ie. the treatment).
2) "Unbelievable".
7. MIGRAINE (2001)
The Bowen Technique National(UK) Migraine Research programme
carried out in 2001 was coordinated by Nikke Arriff. Of 39
participants who suffered from migraine attacks 31 (79.5%)
experienced a decrease in the frequency, severity, or both,
of their migraines. See www.BowenMigraineResearch.co.uk.
8. ASTHMA (2002-04)
The project was coordinated by Nikke Arriff and 24 volunteers
were monitored over 12 months. 83% noted a reduced frequency
of asthma attacks. 75% noted reduced severity of attacks.
75% required less medication. 58% noted a better response
to their medication. All 100% reported an improvement in their
'peak flow readings'. See www.bter.org/research (asthma).
9. CEREBRAL PALSY (ONGOING) Howard Plummer's research
since 1999 in Wales has targeted children with cerebral palsy
and similar conditions. Qualitative outcomes include: Increased
vocalisation; quieter, calmer behaviour; improved co-ordination/concentration/comprehension;
improvements with constipation and with scoliosis; head control
and balance improved; better eye contact. A free clinic is
held regularly in Cardiff for children with cerebral palsy
and related conditions. Telephone contact: 02920-484683.
10. BACK PAIN (2007) This study by BTER, coordinated
by Sandria Marks and Mena Canning used data from 115 therapists
in the UK. They gave a total of 351 treatments people suffering
from back pain, who had never prerviously received Bowen treatment.
Three treatments were given to each participant.
35% reported a full recovery over three sessions of Bowen,
54% reported a partial recovery, with 11% 'unchanged'. Taking
part in this study Tim Willcocks reported that of his 22 participants:
52% reported a good-or-excellent improvement, 38% limited
improvement, and 10% no change.
11. ENERGY PATTERNS (ONGOING)
Changes in bio-magnetic field patterns of the human body have
been recorded by
A. GDV techniques (digital Kirlian photography), and
B. Observation by clairvoyants.
The examples here indicate energy states 'before and after'
a Bowen treatment:
